Today we are talking about a burger that I grew up loving. Originally I am from Southern California. The golden state is known for many things. The beaches, LA, Golden Gate Bridge, and the birth place of one awesome burger joint. One of my favorite family traditions was stopping by the famous In-N-Out burger to grab some of their fresh cut fries and onion smothered burgers after a day soaking up the sun at the beach.
Before I jump into the details of this greasy little treasure… I want to tell you a little about a this fun Burger Nation Sweepstakes hosted by Private Selections and Kroger! But back to these burgers. If you have never ordered an animal style burger or fries from In-N-Out, I suggest you head there right now and do just that. OR make this recipe and enjoy at home!
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon relish
- 1 lb beef
- cheese slices.
- desired topping and buns*
- Start by sautéing your onions in the oil until they are caramelized or just turning brown. Add 1/84 cup water and simmer until mostly dissolved. Set aside.
- Mix your mayonnaise, ketchup, and relish. Set aside.
- Divide your beef into 2-4 patties. This is all depending on how large you want your burger to be in the end. Cook on both sides until browned and cooked through. I do mine in the broiler for 5 minutes on each side. Add the cheese and cook until melted.
- Spread your ketchup mixture onto one (or both) sides of your burger. Layer the patty, onions, and desired toppings, and enjoy!
This burger is my favorite in the series. I used my onion burger buns which paired so well with the sauce and caramelized onions. Some of my favorite toppings are red onions, tomato, and lettuce. Can’t go wrong with the classics.
