New Years resolutions have been all over social media this month. I thought now would be a great time to talk to you about one family resolution that I think is important.
Food Storage.
I had actually never given it serious thought until I had my son. It seems like once you are in charge of keeping someone so small and precious safe your priorities really start to shift. A years supply of food storage seems like such a big feat. That is exactly why I’ve pushed it back, but 2013 is the year that we will accomplish our one year food storage goal. There are so many things to consider… like where will I keep it? How will I keep it organized? What if things go bad before I use it? How many servings should I consider?
I decided that the best place to start is a 72 hour supply.
Lucky for me, the wonderful people over at Prepare to Survive have a handy little bucket that includes 90 servings, which is plenty for our family of three!
Let’s take a second to talk about why it’s important to have food storage. I occasionally get grief from a friend or family member that assumes that I am preparing for the end of the world or something…
That’s not really the case. I think it’s important to have food storage for a number of reasons. Yes, it is a good idea to be prepared for a disaster, but what about economic difficulty? What if we lose our jobs? At least then we will be set with a few of the necessities.
The 90 serving bucket I received comes with:
Oatmeal
Polenta (corn grits)
Cinnamon Rice Pudding
Chicken Flavored Vegetable Stew
Beef Flavored Vegetable Stew
Hearty Potato Soup
Western Chili
Cheddar Broccoli Soup
Red Beans and Rice
Flavor was kind of important to me, but I was assured that they are the best of the best. We decided to put one of the meals to the test, and served a serving of the Cheddar Broccoli Soup to my picky three year old. The verdict? He licked every last drop from the bowl!
That in itself is worth every penny. I am so glad that we are three days closer to our one year food storage goal! On a side note, the packets are perfect to grab and go for camping trips! They don’t take up much room, and all you need is water!
Are you ready for the super exciting news??

I think the 72 hour kit is probably the best item they have. I need a few of those!
My husband thinks I am crazy for collecting all this food and stuff but if something happens and we are warm and well fed, he will be thanking me.
