Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup diced apples
  • 1-2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats

Instructions

  • Combine the butter, diced apples, brown sugar, apple pie spice, cinnamon and salt in a medium sized pot.
  • Heat over low heat and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the apples begin to soften.
  • Stir in the vanilla, water and oats. Bring to a simmer and allow the mix to cook for about 5 minutes, or until most of the water is absorbed into the oatmeal.
  • Serve immediately with milk and additional sweetener like brown sugar, maple syrup, or honey, if desired.

  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
