Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or sausage
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 (14 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 6 oz pasta
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese optional

Instructions

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and prepare the remaining ingredients.
  • Once the pan has heated, add the ground beef, or sausage, and brown until cooked through, about five minutes. Stir in the garlic and allow it to cook for one additional minute.
  • Stir the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, seasonings, pasta and water in the skillet with the cooked beef. Bring the mixture to a simmer, cover and allow to cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the pasta is tender.
  • Serve with a dollop of ricotta cheese, sprinkle of Parmesan, or handful of mozzarella.

Notes

I like to use a combination of half ground beef half Italian sausage. However, you can use almost any cooked protein.
Looking for an easy swap? Try substituting the diced tomatoes and tomato sauce with 2 3/4 cup of your favorite marinara.
