Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Put all the ingredients into a medium-sized pot. This includes the ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic, and any other spices you’re using.
  • Use a whisk to stir everything together until it’s well combined. Make sure there are no lumps.
  • Place the pot on the stove over medium heat. Stir the sauce occasionally as it heats up.
  • Once the sauce starts to bubble gently, turn the heat down to low so it stays at a simmer (a gentle, steady bubbling).
  • Let the sauce simmer for about 20 minutes. Stir it occasionally to make sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot.
  • If the sauce starts to get too thick, add a little bit of water. Pour in a small amount (about a tablespoon at a time) and stir it in until the sauce reaches the consistency you like.
  • Once the sauce is done, let it cool down before using it. You can store any leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Balance the Flavors: Taste the sauce as you go and adjust the ingredients to balance the tanginess, sweetness, and spiciness to your preference.
  • Let It Sit: Allow the sauce to sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour before using it. This helps the flavors meld together and develop.
  • Simmer for Depth: Gently simmer the sauce on low heat for 5-10 minutes to deepen the flavors. Be careful not to boil it, as this can affect the taste.
