Chicken Kebab Marinade
What’s in a marinade? Turns out, this marinade only has ONE ingredient. Here’s everything you need to make these quick skewers.
- Chicken: We have made this recipe over 50 times and tested both chicken breast and chicken thighs. Both give you an equally delicious and tender finish!
- Salad Dressing: This is my secret ingredient! Kraft has a sun dried tomato vinaigrette that is an AMAZING marinade for chicken! They also have a zesty lime and tomato basil that would make a great substitution! (Not sponsored. Just love the ease).
- Vegetables: My typical go-to vegetables are yellow squash, zucchini, and onion. Mainly because those are all things my pickiest eater will love. You can use bell pepper, tomatoes, mushrooms, and even pineapple!
How To Grill Chicken Kabobs
- MARINADE: Cut the chicken into 1 inch pieces. Place the chicken, cut vegetables, and salad dressing into an airtight container. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour, or up to 8 hours.
- PREP: If using wooden skewers be sure to soak them for at least 30 minutes before cooking. Wooden skewers have a tendency to burn when exposed to high heat. Soaking them in water for a period of time helps to reduce the likelihood of them catching fire or becoming overly charred on the grill. Preheat the grill to medium heat.
- GRILL: Thread the chicken and vegetables onto the skewers. Carefully place the kabobs on the grill and cook for 5-7 minutes on each side or until chicken is cooked through.
Helpful Tools
- Skewers: I’ve used both wooden (affiliate) and metal skewers (affiliate). We prefer the wooden.
- Airtight Container: Keeping the marinade and ingredients stored in a quality container help with the flavor. We really love this shallow dish with a lid (affiliate).
- Sheet Pan: I have a set of two sheet pans (affiliate) and they are golden in my kitchen. I use them for everything from savory dishes to desserts!
Recipe Notes:
As a general guideline, it is recommended to marinate chicken for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat. However, for more intense flavor and tenderness, marinating chicken for a longer period can be beneficial. In most cases, marinating chicken for 2 to 24 hours in the refrigerator will provide good results.
Yes, you can absolutely substitute chicken with other types of meat in a chicken kabob recipe. Beef, shrimp, or even other poultry like turkey or duck can be used as alternatives. The choice of meat will affect the flavor and cooking time, so you may need to make adjustments accordingly.
Marinating the chicken before grilling can help infuse flavor and retain moisture. The acidity in marinades or the salt in brines can also help tenderize the meat. Ensure you don’t over-marinate, as this can break down the texture of the chicken.
Yes, you can cook chicken kabobs in the oven instead of on a grill. Here’s a basic method for cooking chicken kabobs in the oven:
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Follow the instructions through soaking the skewers and threading the ingredients onto the stick.
Bake 20 to 25 minutes, turning once, or until the chicken is cooked through to a temperature of 165°F.
Chicken is fully cooked when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
