I have a ten year old. TEN. I’m not sure where the time has gone, but it seems like he is getting more and more independent every single day. Finding ways to connect and make memories has become increasingly difficult.

Luckily, I have one go-to that never fails.

Years and years ago, showing my age here, my dad would take me on a special date. These dates were rare but super meaningful. It always came at the perfect time and always gave me much needed one-on-one attention. I am so sure he has a sixth sense to know when I need some TLC and dad time.

“Let’s take a drive.”

That simple sentence let me know that he was ready to sneak off for a treat. A quick car ride later we would arrive at the cutest A&W restaurant. We would pick the same table and order the same thing: A&W® Root Beer floats.

He would let me gab for what felt like hours while we sipped on the sweet treat. Giving me 100% attention was an easy way to make me feel special and valued. I always left our dates with extra love and appreciation for those moments. To this day, I treasure my dad and look forward to the next time he asks me to go for a drive.

Carrying the tradition over with my son was an easy decision. Once a month, we pick up a case of A&W Root Beer from Walmart and make floats at home. For a couple of hours I sit with him and let him talk about whatever is on his mind.

Giving him a special treat and 100% of my attention is priceless. It warms my heart to see his face light up as we share ice cream and talk about the things he loves. He often tells me how meaningful it is to him that I let him talk about all of his favorite things.

I know that very shortly he will be too busy for mom, but I hope he always has time to take a drive with me.

A&W is celebrating its 100th anniversary! Anything that has been around this long, must be good!

Bonus for you today, while floats are always our go-to we also LOVE to make this easy recipe with A&W Root Beer:
