Ingredients You’ll Need

This tequila paloma keeps it simple, using just a handful of ingredients that pack a flavorful punch. The secret to the best version? Quality tequila and fresh lime juice. Here’s what to grab before you mix:

  • Tequila – Use a good quality blanco (silver) tequila. It’s smooth, crisp, and lets the citrus shine through.
  • Lime juice – Fresh is best! Bottled works in a pinch, but fresh-squeezed gives it that bright, tangy pop.
  • Grapefruit sodaJarritos or Squirt are classic choices. Want to level up? Use fresh grapefruit juice + sparkling water.
  • Ice – Crushed or cubed, make sure it’s fresh. Old freezer ice can taste stale and mess with your drink.

You don’t need a fully stocked bar for this one. Just these basics and you’re ready to shake (or stir) up something refreshing. Let’s make it!

This cocktail is my go-to when I want something quick, refreshing, and a little more exciting than a margarita. It’s light, citrusy, and takes zero effort. Aka perfect for lazy summer nights or last-minute guests. I’ve tested a few versions, and this one hits the sweet spot between easy and crowd-pleasing.

Tip from Jesseca:

Chill your tequila and soda ahead of time so the drink stays crisp without getting watered down. Bonus points if you freeze lime wedges for garnish. They double as ice and look cute too!

Variations and Substitutions

Want to mix things up? The tequila and grapefruit is super versatile, so you can customize it to match your vibe. Here are a few fun twists to try:

  • Spicy Paloma – Muddle a few slices of jalapeño in the glass or rim it with Tajín for a fiery kick.
  • Frozen Paloma – Blend everything with ice for a slushy-style sip that’s perfect for hot days.
  • Herbal Paloma – Add a splash of rosemary or thyme simple syrup, or muddle fresh herbs for a garden-fresh twist.
  • Mocktail Paloma – Skip the tequila and use sparkling water or grapefruit-flavored soda for a zero-proof option.
  • Smoky Paloma – Sub in mezcal for some smoky depth that’s totally next-level.

Whether you’re serving a crowd or sipping solo, these simple swaps keep things fresh without overcomplicating your cocktail game.

Tips for Success

  • Chill everything ahead of time – Keep your tequila, soda, and even your glasses cold. It makes the drink extra refreshing without needing to water it down with excess ice.
  • Use fresh lime juice – Bottled lime juice doesn’t have the same punch. A quick squeeze from half a lime adds brightness and balances the sweetness of the soda.
  • Choose quality grapefruit sodaJarritos, Squirt, or Fever-Tree work great. Avoid sodas that are too sweet or artificial-tasting.
  • Add a salt or Tajín rim – For extra flavor and flair, rub a lime wedge around the rim of your glass and dip it in coarse salt or Tajín before pouring the drink.
  • Don’t skip the stir – A gentle stir after adding the soda keeps everything balanced without losing the bubbles.
  • Want to go fresh? – Replace grapefruit soda with fresh grapefruit juice and club soda for a more natural, tart version.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use fresh grapefruit juice instead of soda?

Absolutely! Use about 2–3 oz of fresh grapefruit juice and top it off with club soda or sparkling water. You’ll get a more tart, natural version of the drink.

What is the best tequila for a Paloma?

Blanco (silver) tequila is the go-to. It’s clean and crisp, letting the citrus flavors shine. Reposado can work too if you want a bit more depth.

Is it supposed to be sweet?

A Paloma is more on the tangy and refreshing side, not overly sweet. Grapefruit soda adds mild sweetness, but you can adjust with a dash of simple syrup if you prefer it sweeter.

What if I don’t have grapefruit soda?

No worries! Use fresh grapefruit juice plus club soda or sparkling water, then sweeten to taste with a little agave or simple syrup.

Can I make it without alcohol?

Yes! Just skip the tequila and mix grapefruit soda with lime juice and sparkling water. It still tastes amazing and refreshing.

Paloma Cocktail Recipe

Author Jesseca
Prep: 5 minutes
Total: 5 minutes
Serves: 1 serving or 1 pitcher
This simple paloma cocktail recipe relies on two key ingredients: Tequila and grapefruit flavored soda. With a dash of lime, and a few quick tricks, you can have a refreshing cocktail in minutes!

Ingredients

Single Serving:

  • 1/2 oz lime juice (about half a lime)
  • 2 oz tequila
  • grapefruit soda
  • ice

Pitcher (4 servings):

  • 1/4 cup lime juice
  • 3/4 cups tequila
  • 3 cups sparkling grapefruit soda
  • ice

Instructions

Single Serving:

  • Fill your glass with ice. Choose a highball or rocks glass and fill it about ¾ of the way with ice cubes.
  • Add the lime juice and tequila. Squeeze in about ½ oz of fresh lime juice (roughly half a lime), then pour in 2 oz of blanco tequila.
  • Top with grapefruit soda. Add 4–6 oz of chilled grapefruit soda, like Jarritos or Squirt. Stir gently to combine and garnish with a lime wedge if desired.

Pitcher (4 servings):

  • Prepare your pitcher. Fill a medium-sized pitcher about halfway with ice.
  • Mix the base. Add 2 oz of fresh lime juice and 8 oz (1 cup) of blanco tequila to the pitcher. Stir well to combine.
  • Add the fizz. Pour in 2 cups of grapefruit soda. Gently stir and add a few lime slices for presentation. Serve immediately in ice-filled glasses.

Notes

  • Do NOT use a cocktail shaker. The carbonation in the soda will cause this to explode into a giant mess.
  • Line the rim of your glass with salt for added flavor.
  • One lime is usually enough for two drinks.
  • We use short glasses for our cocktails. For a more sweet flavor use a tall glass and more soda.
  • Can’t find grapefruit soda? You can add fresh grapefruit juice and club soda in its place.
