Homemade Blackberry Lemonade Ingredients:

You only need 4 simple ingredients for this refreshing beverage. Most, beyond the berries, are pantry staples or FREE. Here’s what you are going to need to get started:

  • Water- Hello freebie. Use tap or filtered water.
  • Sugar- Not too much is needed. Just enough to sweeten the tartness of the lemon.
  • Blackberries- Fresh works best, but you can also make this recipe with frozen berries during the off season.
  • Lemon Juice- Use fresh squeezed. I promise it’s worth it.

If you are intimidated by hand squeezing lemons for fresh juice, don’t be! It can be incredibly simple and worth the extra five minutes! Bonus? Fresh lemon juice is loaded with vitamin C giving you an extra health boost!

How to make lemonade with blackberries:

  1. Combine 1 cup of water with the sugar and berries in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, smashing the berries with the back of a fork or a potato masher to release some of their juice.
  3. Once the sugar has dissolved, about 2 to 3 minutes of cooking, remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly.
  4. Strain the seeds from the syrup using a fine strainer or cheesecloth into a large pitcher. Discard the seeds.
  5. Stir in the lemon juice and remaining 3 cups of water.
  6. Chill and serve with ice.

Side note, the simple syrup in this recipe makes an EXCELLENT blackberry lemonade drink mix. You can keep it stored for weeks in the refrigerator or use it to make a blackberry lemonade cocktail!

Lemonade Serving Ideas:

Serving this easy drink recipe at a party or gathering? I’ve got a few serving suggestions that will make this the most elegant punch!

Recipe Tips and FAQs

  • This drink will separate slightly. Give it a good stir before serving.
  • Substitute the blackberries for your favorite fruit. We have tried this recipe with strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries with great success.
  • Too tart? Try stirring in 1/4 cup more sugar.
How many lemons does it take to squeeze a cup?

You might be surprised to learn you only need about 3 to 4 good sized lemons to get one cup of lemon juice. Pick lemons that are bold in color and not too squishy.

Does homemade lemonade need to be refrigerated?

Yes. Because this recipe uses fresh squeezed lemons and berries it needs to be stored in the refrigerator. Leaving blackberry lemonade out at room temperature will result in a quickly spoiled drink.

Can I make this lemonade fizzy?

Yes! If you want to add a little carbonation, replace the water with carbonated water. You can even try different flavors to mix up your drink taste.

Can you freeze lemonade?

Yes. Freezing this recipe is a great idea. Why? Toss some into a blender on a hot summer day and you have a homemade slushy!
