Why You’ll Love This Blueberry Lemonade

  • Refreshing and Hydrating: There is nothing more refreshing on a hot day. This lemonade is light and refreshing without the tacky aftertaste you sometimes get with lemons.
  • Customizable: Sweet tooth? Add more honey or sugar. Love a tart kick? Squeeze in an extra lemon. It’s your drink, your way.
  • Party Perfect: Hosting? Impress your guests with something unique and homemade. Cheers to being the best host!

I am always looking for fun and creative ways to use berries. This lemonade is high on our list of favorites. It is so stinken easy to make and the blueberry syrup adds an incredible refreshing flavor that pairs beautifully with the lemon!

Oh, and did I mention it got the stamp of approval from my picky eater? He requests this easy lemonade recipe on a regular basis during the summer (and winter). Since it comes together quickly, I try to keep a pitcher full on hand at all times. It is a great way for him and all of his friends to cool down after they run around in the summer heat.

Ingredients You Need

With only four ingredients, you can have this ready in under 10 minutes!

  • Blueberries
  • Sugar
  • Lemon juice
  • Water

We have made this recipe with both regular granulated sugar as well as sweetener substitutes. Both work well so if you are looking for a low sugar option you could always switch to Stevia or your typical go-to.

Blueberry Lemonade Recipe

Yes! In fact, we use frozen over regular. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to grab and go. You don’t even need to thaw them before making the syrup. Just make sure to give it an extra minute to simmer.

  1. Place blueberries, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice in a small saucepan. Simmer over low heat until thickened. Strain through cheesecloth squeezing all of the juice into a container. Discard blueberry bits. Allow to cool slightly. *
  2. Stir together 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of water in another small pan. Heat just until sugar is dissolved.
  3. Stir together 4-1/2 cups of lemon juice, 2 cups of water, blueberry juice, and syrup mixture. Chill and serve over ice.

You could always skip the straining of the berries and stir all of the mixture into your lemonade. We tend to leave them in our drink when making this on a regular basis. The blueberries tend to add a little more flavor the longer they sit, and my son likes to eat the blueberry mash with a spoon. Think of it as an added treat.

Helpful Recipe Tools

For your blueberry lemonade adventure, having the right tools makes all the difference! Here’s the lowdown on the essentials:

  • Fine Mesh Strainer: To catch those pesky blueberry skins and seeds, because nobody wants a chewy drink.
  • Measuring Cup and Spoons: Accuracy is key for that perfect sweet-tart balance. Eyeballing can wait for another day.
  • Pitcher or Large Jar: Where the magic happens. Mix it all up in something big enough for a generous serving.
  • Glasses and Ice: It’s all about serving it cool and Instagram-ready.

Armed with these, you’re all set to make a blueberry lemonade that’s bound to be a crowd-pleaser!

Expert Recipe Tips:

  • Fresh is Best: Use lemons for a burst of natural flavors. The fresher, the zestier!
  • Sweeten Smartly: Depending on your sweet tooth, adjust the sugar. Honey, agave, or even maple syrup can be a delightful twist.
  • Chill Factor: Serve it ice-cold. Even better, make ice cubes out of lemonade or blueberry juice so it doesn’t water down.
  • Lemon Zest Levitation: Grate a bit of lemon zest into your lemonade. It’s like a flavor bomb, minus the explosion.
  • Balance is Key: Find the right balance between sweet and tart. Start with less sugar, taste, and then add more if needed.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use frozen blueberries?

Absolutely! Frozen blueberries work great, especially when fresh ones aren’t in season. They can also help chill the drink. That being said, stick to fresh lemons!

Is it okay to leave the blueberry bits in?

Sure thing! If you enjoy a bit of texture in your drink, leave them in. For a smoother drink, strain them out.

Can I make this in advance?

You can. Make sure it is stored covered inside the refrigerator. It’s best enjoyed within 2-3 days when stored in the refrigerator.

Can I make this lemonade fizzy?

You can! Replace half of the water with sparkling club soda or sprite. Doing this does reduce the time this lemonade will stay fresh.

Can I make this into a cocktail?

Yep. Lemonades make a delicious cocktail. Add a splash of vodka, taste, and adjust the flavors according to your taste preference.
