Frozen Chicken Nuggets in the Air Fryer
This post may contain affiliate links.
Air FryFrozen Chicken Nuggets come out crisp on the outside, hot in the center, and cook in less time than the oven. Our air fryer is easily the most-used appliance in our kitchen and honestly the only way we’ve made nuggets for years. The texture turns out so much better than the microwave without heating up the whole kitchen.

Why You’ll Love This Method
- Faster than heating up the oven and easier to clean up afterward.
- Crispier than microwave nuggets with way better texture.
- Easy enough for a quick lunch, lazy dinner, or after-school snack.
- Works with almost any brand, including dino nuggets, spicy nuggets, and gluten-free options.
This is one of those back-pocket meals that makes busy days feel a little easier. Toss the nuggets into the air fryer, set the timer, and dinner, lunch, or snack is basically handled with almost no effort.
It’s also surprisingly easy to customize depending on what your family likes. Serve them with fries, fruit, mac and cheese, or a few dipping sauces and suddenly frozen nuggets feel a lot less like a last-minute meal.

Best Frozen Nuggets for the Air Fryer
Not all frozen chicken nuggets cook the same in the air fryer. Some get extra crispy, some have thicker breading, and a few brands cook much faster than expected. After making nuggets this way for years, these are the ones we reach for most often.
- Tyson Nuggets: One of the crispiest options with classic fast-food-style breading. These brown evenly and usually don’t need much flipping.
- Just Bare Chicken Chunks: Great texture with a more lightly breaded coating. They take slightly longer to crisp but taste the most like restaurant chicken nuggets.
- Perdue Nuggets: Softer breading with a more traditional frozen nugget texture. These cook quickly and are a good option for younger kids.
- Kirkland Chicken Chunks: Super popular for a reason. Thick pieces of chicken with crispy edges, though they do best with a basket shake halfway through cooking.
- Dino Nuggets: The thinner tails and edges cook faster, so keep an eye on them during the last few minutes. Perfect for quick lunches and picky eaters.
- Gluten-Free Nuggets: These vary the most by brand. A light spray of oil can help the coating crisp up better without drying them out.
One thing we’ve noticed is that thicker chicken chunks almost always need a flip or basket shake halfway through cooking, while thinner nuggets can usually cook straight through without much fuss.

Jesseca’s Recipe Review
As a mom and self-proclaimed air fryer addict, I can confidently say this is the only way to cook frozen chicken nuggets. They come out perfectly crispy every single time. No soggy microwave mess or waiting on the oven. It’s fast, foolproof, and a total game-changer on hectic nights.
Tip from Jesseca:
Don’t overcrowd the basket! Give your nuggets a little breathing room so the hot air can circulate and crisp up every bite evenly.

A Few Things That Can Ruin Your Nuggets
The good news is that this recipe is pretty forgiving once you figure out what works best with your specific air fryer and favorite nugget brand.
- Overcrowding the basket: Nuggets need space for the hot air to circulate. If the basket is packed too tightly, they’ll steam instead of crisp.
- Stacking the nuggets: Even a small stack can leave the bottom nuggets soft and unevenly cooked.
- Spraying too much oil: A light spray is fine, but too much oil can make the breading greasy instead of crispy.
- Skipping the basket shake: Shaking or flipping halfway through helps both sides brown evenly and keeps the bottoms from getting soggy.
- Overcooking: Just a minute or two too long can dry out the chicken, especially with thinner nuggets or dino nuggets.
- Cooking nuggets straight from a frosty clump: If the nuggets are frozen together in a solid block, they won’t cook evenly. Break them apart before adding them to the air fryer.
Easy Ways to Serve Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets
These are one of the easiest things to turn into a full meal without much extra work. Serve them with fries, fruit, mac and cheese, veggies, or a simple side salad for an easy lunch or quick weeknight dinner.
They’re also perfect for dipping. Try them with ranch, honey mustard, BBQ sauce, ketchup, buffalo ranch, fry sauce, or your favorite Raising Cane’s style sauce. For picky eaters, setting out a few different sauces somehow makes nuggets feel way more fun.
- Slice them into wraps
- Add them to salads
- Make mini chicken parmesan sandwiches
- Serve over waffles
- Toss into a lunch bowl with veggies and rice
- Pair with pasta or macaroni and cheese for an easy dinner
Honestly, this is one of those freezer staples that makes busy nights feel much less chaotic.
Tips For Perfect Nuggets
- Preheat your air fryer: Starting with a hot basket helps the nuggets cook more evenly and crisp up faster.
- Don’t overcrowd: Give each nugget space so the hot air can circulate—this is the secret to that perfect crunch.
- Shake halfway through: Gently shake the basket halfway to ensure even cooking on all sides.
- Know your nuggets: Smaller nuggets (like Just Bare) may cook faster than larger ones (like Tyson tenders), so adjust your time as needed.
- Serve immediately: For the crispiest texture, enjoy them hot out of the air fryer. Letting them sit too long can cause them to soften.
- No oil needed: Most frozen nuggets are already pre-cooked and have enough fat to crisp up beautifully without added spray.
How to Reheat Chicken Nuggets in the Air Fryer
The air fryer is the best way to reheat leftover chicken nuggets while keeping the breading crispy instead of soggy.
- Temperature: 350°F
- Cook Time: 3 to 5 minutes
- Best Tip: Arrange the nuggets in a single layer for even reheating
If the nuggets are stacked or crowded together, the breading can soften from trapped steam instead of crisping back up.
Microwave vs Air Fryer
- Air Fryer: Crispy outside, better texture, tastes freshly cooked
- Microwave: Faster, but the breading usually turns soft or rubbery
If you have a few extra minutes, the air fryer is absolutely worth it for leftovers.

Frozen Chicken Nugget Air Fryer FAQs
Yes. Most frozen chicken nuggets already contain enough oil in the breading to crisp up well in the air fryer. If you want extra browning, you can lightly spray them with oil, but it’s optional.
Not always, but preheating helps the nuggets cook more evenly and crisp faster. If your air fryer has a preheat setting, it’s worth using.
It’s best not to. Stacking blocks airflow and can leave the nuggets soft instead of crispy. A single layer gives the best texture.
Absolutely. Dino nuggets air fryer instructions are almost identical to regular nuggets, though the thinner edges and tails can cook a little faster.
Yes, as long as both items cook at a similar temperature. Shake the basket halfway through cooking so everything crisps evenly.

Degrees of what? Celsius? Kelvin? Fahrenheit?
Fahrenheit
I bought the nuggets with no breading, would this recipe work for those, as well?
It should. I would check them at 8 minutes.
What do you mean by “on basket on top of the tray”? Do you mean a crisper tray or just on top of the bottom of the basket
“into the basket and on top of the tray.” – If you have a basket type air fryer. It goes onto the crisper tray. If you have a toaster oven style it goes onto the tray.
