Why My Teen Actually Requests This
- Two Ways to Bake: Choose the classic “viral” 3-ingredient version or my “Improved” version for a fluffier texture.
- Single Serve: Perfect for midnight cravings or a quick after-school treat.
- Minimal Cleanup: Everything is mixed and cooked right in the mug.
- Video Tutorial: Watch the step-by-step video below to see the exact batter consistency you need!
This recipe works because the ingredients do more than they seem. Crushed Oreos act as both flour and sugar. The cookie crumbs absorb the milk to create structure, while the cream filling melts into the batter and keeps the cake soft and fudgy instead of dry. Fully stirring the batter matters more than exact timing because any dry pockets will cook unevenly and ruin the texture.
Microwave mug cakes are extremely sensitive to time and space. Overcooking by even a few seconds can turn a soft center rubbery, which is why stopping when the edges are set is key. Using a 10 to 12 oz mug gives the batter room to rise and cook evenly, preventing dense or gummy results. When these small details line up, you get a rich, tender mug cake every time.

Before You Start
This microwavable oreo cake works because the ingredients do double duty, but small choices can quietly change the final texture. Here’s what to know before you mix so you get the result you actually want.
- Oreos. Regular Oreos create a more structured, cake-like crumb, while Double Stuf makes the cake softer and more fudgy thanks to the extra filling.
- Milk. Whole milk gives the smoothest, richest texture, but low-fat milk works if needed and will produce a slightly lighter, less tender cake.
- Sour Cream or Yogurt (Optional). Adding a tablespoon helps prevent dryness and keeps the cake soft and moist, especially if your microwave tends to overcook mug cakes.
- Butter (Optional). A small amount of melted butter adds depth and richness and is worth using when you want this to feel more like dessert than a quick snack.
These simple tweaks don’t add effort, but they give you control over the outcome, which is exactly what most mug cake recipes leave out.

Jesseca’s Recipe Review
This Oreo mug cake is my ultimate guilty pleasure. It’s rich, fluffy, and dangerously easy. It’s saved me countless times from those late-night snack attacks. Highly recommend keeping extra Oreos on hand because once you start, it’s impossible to stop!
Tip from Jesseca:
Microwave strengths vary, so start checking your mug cake around the 60-second mark. You’ll know it’s done when the top looks set but slightly gooey in the center—trust me, that’s the sweet spot!
The “Gourmet” Upgrade (Best Texture)
Feeling fancy or just missing an ingredient? I’ve got you covered with easy tweaks and tasty spins on If you find the 3-ingredient version too “gooey,” add these to the mix for a more traditional cake crumb:
- Butter: Just a teaspoon to add a little fat and moisture.
- Sour cream: This is the workhorse. It fixes texture without making it rich-heavy.
- Salt: Barely there, but it wakes everything up.
Feeling fancy or just missing an ingredient? I’ve got you covered.
- Flavor Twist: Swap classic Oreos for Golden Oreos, Mint Oreos, or Peanut Butter Oreos to shake things up.
- Extra Chocolate: Mix in chocolate chips or drizzle chocolate syrup on top after cooking for ultimate decadence.
- Nutty Crunch: Add a spoonful of peanut butter or sprinkle some crushed peanuts for extra flavor and texture.
Feel free to get creative. This recipe is forgiving, fun, and meant to be customized.

The Microwave Wattage Guide
Mug cakes fail most often because of overcooking. Use this guide based on your microwave’s power:
| Microwave Wattage | Suggested Cook Time |
| 1200 Watts | 60 seconds |
| 1000 Watts | 75 seconds |
| 800 Watts | 90 seconds |
Check doneness by touching the top; it should spring back slightly but still look a tiny bit “shiny” in the very center.
Tips for Success
- Don’t Overcook: Less is more. Microwave in short bursts after the first minute—overcooking will dry out your cake quickly.
- Use the Right Mug: Go for a microwave-safe mug that’s wider rather than narrow. It’ll cook more evenly.
- Smooth Batter: Make sure your batter is fully mixed. No dry crumbs left behind means a smoother, fluffier cake.
- Serve Immediately: Mug cakes taste best hot out of the microwave, topped with whipped cream, ice cream, or extra crushed Oreos.
- Customize Your Crumbs: Prefer chunkier Oreo bits? Pulse less for a more textured cake.
- Check Wattage: Adjust cooking times based on your microwave’s wattage—stronger microwaves cook faster, so start checking around 45–60 seconds.

Your Oreo Mug Cake Questions, Answered
Yes. Double Stuf will make the cake softer and more fudgy because of the extra filling. If you prefer a more cake-like texture, stick with regular Oreos.
A 10 to 12 oz microwave-safe mug works best. Smaller mugs can cause overflow and uneven cooking.
It was likely overcooked. Mug cakes continue to cook after the microwave stops, so pull it when the edges are set and the center still looks slightly soft.
Technically yes, but the texture will be much denser. The small amount of baking powder helps give the cake just enough lift.
It’s best not to. Mug cakes cook unevenly when scaled up. For more than one serving, make multiple mugs instead.
Mug cakes are best eaten fresh. If needed, cover and refrigerate for up to one day, then reheat in short 10-second bursts.

Fix-It Guide: If Something Went Wrong
Why this matters: mug cakes are fast, but small tweaks fix nearly every issue. Once you know what to adjust, you’ll get better results every time instead of guessing.
- Too dry. Your mug cake likely cooked a little too long or your microwave runs hot. Next time, stop cooking as soon as the edges are set and the center still looks slightly soft, or stir in the optional tablespoon of sour cream to keep it moist.
- Too gooey. This usually means it just needs more time. Microwave in short bursts of 10 to 15 seconds until the top looks set but not firm. The center should be soft, not liquid.
- Overflowed. Your mug was too small or too full. A 10 to 12 oz mug gives the batter room to rise without spilling over. If in doubt, place the mug on a plate before microwaving.
- Tastes flat. A pinch of salt makes a bigger difference than you’d expect, especially with Oreo-based desserts. It balances the sweetness and brings out the chocolate flavor without making it taste salty.

Oreo Mug Cake (The “Better-Than-Viral” Version)
Ingredients
The Viral 3-Ingredient Version
- 4 oreo cookies
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 3 tablespoons milk
Optional – For a "Gourmet" Crumb
- 1 teaspoon melted butter
- 1 tablespoon sour cream
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Use a microwave-safe mug (10–12 oz is ideal). For the easiest cleanup, lightly spray the inside with non-stick spray.
- Add Oreo cookies to a blender or food processor. Pulse until you have fine, even crumbs. No blender? Pop the Oreos in a zip-top bag and crush them using a rolling pin until finely ground.
- Pour the Oreo crumbs into the prepared mug. Add baking powder and milk, stirring thoroughly until combined and smooth.
- Optional: if using stir in the melted butter, sour cream, and salt.
- Cook the mug cake in the microwave for 1 minute. Carefully check the cake. If the top looks too wet or raw, microwave for an additional 20–30 seconds.
- Allow the cake to cool for about 1 minute before enjoying. It’ll still be warm, gooey, and irresistible.
- TIP: Cooking time varies by microwave strength. Start checking at 60 seconds to avoid overcooking. The perfect mug cake will look set around the edges with a slightly soft center.

Warm, fudgy, and easy to make!
I eyeballed the measurements after mashing the oreos in my mug, and
I put it in the microwave for 40 seconds. Came out a little spongy, smooth,
and not too sweet!
Tastes exactly like an oreo with cake texture, which was what I was expecting.
10/10, I’ll definitely do this on my next weekend alone.
I didn’t use oil the first time, since I forgot, but the second time I used oil and it
slid out of the mug perfectly without affecting the flavor.
You can buy some cake decorations, plop the cake on a small plate and decorate
your mug oreo cake!
I did this with my younger sisters, and they loved it.
Ahhh I love this so much, Alana! Your Oreo mug cake review is chef’s kiss and I’m totally here for the weekend-alone cake ritual.
You might want to get in touch with editing and fix a boo boo, instruction 3: Stir the crumbs, baking powder, and milk into the prepared mug cuntil combined.
I’m not sure I understand the issue? Could you break this down for me so I can fix it if there is a mistake?
Kendra was just letting you know there is a spelling mistake in instruction 3.
It should say: Stir the crumbs, baking powder, and milk into the prepared mug UNTIL combined.
Instead it says: Stir the crumbs, baking powder, and milk into the prepared mug CUNTIL combined.
lol hope that helps!
OH MY! Thank you for breaking that down for me. lol. I fixed it.
I couldn’t find the measurements that easily it should be by the ingredients.
It was easy to make but mine didn’t rise
It smells like the oreo cereal and it’s really spongey
I’m not really sure what it taste like tbh idk if it’s oreo
I am 14 and sick so my taste buds might be off 😂
My 9 year old saw this online and asked me to make it, so I pulled up this one. It was easy for him to do himself and he LOVED it. It looked so good I had to make myself one too. We printed it out and have it handy for future uses, because this was delicious!!!
finally one that tastes decent. thx!
I would recomend mirowaving for about 2 minutes instead of 1, but it still turned out amazing. I used red velvet oreos instead and definintly recomend.

Great! I’m only 12, but this is super easy for me!!! And it tastes great!
This needs sugar. I made it and it does not taste very good at all.
Hi Eloise, did you use the oreo cookie brand? I’ve never had it not sweet enough
I would add one extra oreo, hardly crushed up and it would be plenty sweet. Also, making it with whole milk may help as whole milk has more sugar than others. We tried it and thought it was perfect!
Wow I am amazed. My eight year old has been begging to make this for him. Reluctantly I gave in. I am so glad I did. This is the easiest one person dessert. I am a fan and will be trying different Oreo flavors. Thank you for share his recipe!!
Worked great, good texture and overall pretty good exept for taste. It was a little bland so I would put like vanilla extract and/or sugar or something in it to get a bit more flavor. Or just eat it with something like ice cream. I dunno. But yeah, improve the flavor of it and I think it would be the perfect quick desert.
Thanks for the feedback, Tayvin.
LOVE IT. period
Thank you for taking the time to review and comment, Abi. Love getting feedback.
I used this recipe and it burned the cake
Hi Anas, I’m sorry that happened. Do you happen to know what wattage you have on your microwave? In the notes of the recipe it mentions maybe needing less time for higher wattage.
My daughter loves making these! We followed the recipe and it came out perfect! Thank you for sharing.
I’m so glad your daughter likes this recipe, Laura!
So I made this, followed the recipe, yet the cake didn’t rise. I’m pretty sure my microwave has a higher wattage, yet putting it in there for 2 minutes total (split up to check) it only turned out gummy, like I ate a warm gummy from a car in 106 degree weather, so it wasn’t cooking through. I did use a pack of mini Oreos because it seemed like a pretty close ratio, but I don’t know if I did anything wrong or if this is how it’s supposed to turn out.
Hi Dax. I’ll remake this today live on my instagram feed. You should be able to watch the video and see how it turns out.
my microwave is the same wattage i followed the steps closely but it burnt and now my whole house smells horrible YOU NEED TO FIX THIS
I’ve made this recipe over a dozen times without that problem. Did you check it as it at a lower time as suggested in the recipe?
It was really good 😊 even though it didn’t come out correctly but it still taste good if you want a delicious snack and you only have 5 minutes it’s good for you.
Thank you, Kiara. I always love helpful feedback and hearing that people like my recipes.
this is a keeper! I’ve tried so many other recipes that just didn’t work. this oreo mug cake worked like a charm. I don’t think I ground the cookies up enough though, because it was a little gritty, but the end result was delicious, moist, and chocolatey. I used mint oreos and substituted half and half for the milk. thank you thank you thank you
Hit Stevie, I’ll have to give this a try with mint Oreos! It sounds like a delicious substitute.
so gooodddddddd
