What exactly is a seven layer dip? Seven-layer dip is a popular Mexican-inspired party appetizer that features seven delicious layers of different ingredients. Typically served in a shallow dish, each layer adds its own unique flavor to create a mouthwatering and visually appealing dish. The traditional layers often include: refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, salsa, cheese, olives, and green onions.
Halloween Seven Layer Dip Ingredients
The ingredient list is fairly basic for a dip recipe! Here is what you will need to get started:
- Refried Beans: I used a traditional bean, but you can use any of your favorite refried beans. Even homemade.
- Milk: Just enough to thin the beans for spreading. Although, some homemade beans are already thin enough and won’t need this addition.
- Cream Cheese: One of my favorite layers includes a combination of cream cheese and sour cream. It is delightfully tangy, but you can always substitute this with more sour cream.
- Sour Cream: We tested this with many different varieties. Use whatever sour cream you use normally.
- Taco Seasoning: Just a touch to add a little kick of flavor and spice. I like a mild seasoning, but to kick up the heat you can use a spicy.
- Guacamole: You can use pre-made or homemade guacamole for this recipe. We like to use the Costco brand for ease.
- Salsa: Again, you can use store bought or homemade salsa. I opt for store bought for ease and to cut back on the prep time.
- Cheese: Cheddar cheese or pepper jack work well for this recipe.
- Olives: One can of sliced olives does the trick! Make sure they are black olives as green olives will change the flavor of the dish.
- Green Onion: The last layer in this dish is green onion. It adds a pop of flavor and freshness that is unbeatable.
How To Make A Seven Layer Dip For Halloween
- LAYER 1: Stir together the refried beans and milk until smooth and slightly thinned. Spread into the bottom of a 9×13 pan OR 2 9 inch pans.
- LAYER 2: In a clean mixing bowl, whisk together the cream cheese, sour cream, and taco seasoning until smooth, about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Spread evenly over the top of the bean layer.
- LAYER 3: Spread guacamole over the sour cream, creating the third layer, being careful not to press too hard.
- LAYER 4: Spoon the salsa over the top of the guacamole, carefully spread to create the next layer in the dip.
- LAYER 5: Sprinkle an even layer of cheese over the salsa.
- LAYER 6: Spread the olives, optionally with sliced tomatoes, on the edges of the dish.
- LAYER 7: Sprinkle the edges generously with green onion.
- SPIDER WEB: Add the extra sour cream to a small zip top bag and carefully snip off the corner. Pipe the sour cream into a spider web shape.
- SPIDERS: Slice one whole olive in half for the spider body and use sliced olive pieces to create the spider legs.
- ENJOY: Serve immediately or cover and chill until ready to serve.
Helpful Tools
- 9×13 Pan: If you plan on taking this appetizer on the go, I recommend using a 9×13 pan with a lid (affiliate). Let the brownies cool completely then cover. Easy peasy.
- Electric Mixer: Add one of these mixers (affiliate) to your must-have list! They are a game changer for avid cooks. That being said, a handheld mixer (affiliate) works too!
- Silicone Spatulas: If you don’t have a set of silicone spatulas (affiliate), I highly recommend in adding them to your kitchen.
Recipe Notes:
Yes, you can prepare the dip a few hours ahead and refrigerate it. However, it’s best to add the fresh toppings just before serving.
Tortilla chips are the classic choice for dipping, but you can also use pita chips, corn chips, or even vegetable sticks.
Absolutely! Store-bought versions work well, but homemade can add a fresher taste if you have the time.
If stored properly in an airtight container, it should stay fresh for up to 3-4 days.
Absolutely! Feel free to switch or add layers to suit your preferences, like adding seasoned ground meat or jalapeños.
Yes, you can add hot sauce or diced jalapeños to the salsa or guacamole for a spicier kick.
