There is honestly nothing quite like a warm baked apple. It is a go-to fall flavor and there are so many fun ways you can play around with the fruit. This caramel apple crumble has to be close to the top for me. It checks all of the boxes; Quick prep, no-fail, DELICIOUS!

Add this to your fall bake list and thank me later.

Apple Crisp Ingredients:

This dessert is inspired by, and dare I say better than, the Denny’s apple crisp. Like their menu states, it’s like a warm apple pie topped with ice cream and caramel sauce. Basically heaven. Here’s what you will need:

  • Granulated Sugar
  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Cinnamon and Nutmeg
  • Apples
  • Quick Oats
  • Brown Sugar
  • Baking Powder and Baking Soda
  • Butter
  • Caramel Sauce– Homemade or store bought.

This recipe really is made for serving a la mode. So I am adding one more ingredient to the list; VANILLA ICE CREAM. Trust me on this. It is so delicious when you get a bite of the cold ice cream and warm soft apples.

How to Make Apple Crisp:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep a 9×9 inch pan by lightly misting with cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl combine the flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss the sliced apples in the mixture until coated.
  3. Pour into the prepared pan, spreading into an even layer. You will have extra flour. That’s ok. Let it all fall into the dish.
  4. In a separate bowl stir together the oats, brown sugar, baking powder, and baking soda.
  5. Mix the butter into the dry ingredients and stir until a crumble texture is achieved.
  6. Sprinkle evenly over your apple crisp.
  7. Bake 45 minutes.
  8. Serve drizzled with caramel sauce and a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Tips and FAQs for this Apple Crisp with Caramel Sauce

  • Here’s the skinny- This recipe is SO dang good with the caramel sauce. We have made our own (link here) and used store bought. Both ways are delicious. If you have time to try my homemade version I suggest you use it, but the store bought is just as tasty.
  • Double check you are using quick oats. They will give you a wonderful crunchy topping- which is what you really want on top of the soft apples.
What apples do I use for an apple crisp?

When making this caramel apple crumble you want to be sure to pick firm and crisp apple varieties. We stick with either Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. Occasionally, when they are on sale, I’ll also use Golden Delicious.

Should you peel apples for apple crisp?

Yes. I have tested both ways and everyone loves the version with peeled apples best. Apple skin can be tough, even when it is baked down, and cause an unappealing texture.

Why is my apple crisp not crispy?

The biggest cause for a soft and soggy topping is too much butter. This caramel apple crisp recipe has been made dozens of times to perfect the proportions. You also want to make sure you mix the topping well to coat the oats evenly.

You show granulated sugar in the ingredients (in addition to brown sugar) but not in the recipe?

Oops! Thanks for catching that, Kathleen. I adjusted and fixed the recipe. The granulated sugar should be tossed with the apples.
