If you are ever finding yourself in a pickle and wondering, “What should I make for Halloween?” This is your answer. Quick, simple, and spookily delicious.
What You Need:
I mentioned above that this recipe calls for three simple ingredients. Because there are minimal items needed, I recommend reaching for quality. Find berries that are ripe so you get that bold flavor. Here’s the full list of what you will need:
- Strawberries- We try to look for slightly larger berries, but small work too. It looks beautiful to have a plate full of varying sizes.
- White Chocolate- If you are new to working with chocolate, consider starting with candy melts. They are a little more forgiving and easier to melt.
What is the secret to making chocolate covered strawberries?
Like I mentioned above, the biggest key in getting perfect berries is to find ripe fruit. You want them to be flavorful so they can shine through the chocolate. Another thing to consider is to wash your berries thoroughly and dry them before dipping. Washing your berries helps extend their life and rid them of any spores on the fruit. Here’s our go-to for washing fruit:
How to Wash Berries:
- Combine 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar with 4 cups of water.
- Place the berries in the mixture and allow them to sit for 1-3 minutes, moving them around the water to help loosen up any dirt.
- Drain the berries in a colander and rinse thoroughly.
How to Make Mummy Chocolate Covered Strawberries
- Line a workstation with parchment to help prep for your strawberry Mummies.
- Place the chocolate in a microwave safe container. Heat on the defrost setting for 1 minute. Stir well. If any additional pieces of chocolate remain, heat an additional 15 to 30 seconds, being careful not to overheat. Add a teaspoon or two of shortening, if needed, to slightly thin the chocolate if you find it to be too thick.
- Holding the berry by the top or stem, dip into the melted chocolate. Lift and twist slightly to allow the excess chocolate to fall back into the cup or bowl.
- Set onto the prepared parchment paper and immediately add two candy eyes.
- Repeat with the remaining fruit.
- Add 1/2 cup white chocolate and 1 teaspoon shortening to a small zip top bag. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds on the defrost setting, adding additional time if needed to fully melt the candy.
- Snip the corner of the bag with clean scissors.
- Drizzle the melted white chocolate back and forth over each berry to create the mummy wrap.
- Let the berries set for 5 minutes and enjoy.
Recipe Tips and FAQs

- Chocolate too thick? Add a bit of shortening to thin it.
- Having a hard time holding on to the berry when dipping? Add a toothpick to the top (right through the green part) and hold it while placing the berry into the chocolate.
For this recipe I recommend using white chocolate chips or white candy melts. Both are easy to work with and provide the perfect flavor for the berries.
Not necessarily. I have dipped both room temperature and cold berries with great success. One tip, leave them at room temperature AFTER dipping to allow the chocolate to set.
You can make this recipe a day in advance if you’d like, but making the berries too soon can give you a sub par treat. I recommend making them at least an hour before serving but no more than 24 hours before.
Easy Chocolate Covered Strawberries will last 1 to 2 days and should be eaten fairly quickly. If you aren’t planning on eating them right away, they are best stored on a plate or open container in the refrigerator. Allow to come to room temperature before serving.
Before you start to dip, make sure the berries are dry from washing. Any extra water or moisture will cause the chocolate not to stick.
