How to make 4th of July Chocolate Covered Oreos:
Before I start, I want to give you a quick guide of helpful items to have on hand for when you are working with chocolate. These items are what I use to make the process even easier.
- Liquid Measuring Cups- These keep the chocolate in a controlled space which helps keep it deep for dipping.
- Silicone Spatulas- Perfect for stirring. I find that regular spoons tend to cool the chocolate faster giving you less time to work.
- Parchment Paper- Ideal for placing your dipped cookies. Once firm they will not stick to the parchment paper.
- Extra Hands! You need to work quickly when applying sprinkles or toppings. I have my son sprinkle the cookies as soon as I dip and place on the parchment paper. This makes the process go buy quickly and we get a little quality time in the kitchen.
NOW, on to the instructions! Here’s how quick and easy these July 4th Oreos really are:
- Prep your workspace by laying out parchment or wax paper.
- Pour some sprinkles into a small dish or bowl. Set next to the parchment.
- Place half of the white OR blue candy melts into a glass 2 cup liquid measuring cup (affiliate).
- Microwave the candy melts on defrost for 1 minute and stir.
- Microwave 30 seconds. Stir until all lumps are melted.
- If you still have chocolate pieces and the mixture is not smooth, microwave 15 additional seconds.
- Working quickly, drop one Oreo cookie into the melted chocolate.
- Use a fork to turn the cookie once, fully coating in the chocolate.
- Carefully lift the cookie out of the melted chocolate. Tap the bottom of the fork on the side of the measuring cup, allowing excess chocolate to fall, 2 to 5 times.
- Gently tap the fork onto the parchment allowing the cookie to slide off.
- Top with sprinkles immediately.
- Repeat with remaining cookies.
- Allow the chocolate to set, about 10 minutes, and enjoy!
Tips For Making Chocolate Covered Oreos
- I really like to use these smaller silicone spatulas (affiliate) when working with chocolate. They are ideal for stirring and smoothing out the chocolate during the melting process.
- You can use regular chocolate in this recipe, just be sure to temper appropriately. Candy melts are perfect for beginners (or for a quicker treat) because it does not require the patience of tempering and gives you vibrant colors.
- The best method we have found for melting chocolate candy melts is as follows;
- Microwave on defrost for 1 minute and stir.
- Microwave 30 seconds. Stir until all lumps are melted.
- If you still have chocolate pieces and the mixture is not smooth, microwave 15 additional seconds.
Chocolate covered Oreos will last up to two weeks when stored properly. That makes them the ideal make-ahead dessert for sharing, gift giving or dessert trays!
It is best to keep these cookies in an airtight container. That will help keep them fresh for the full two weeks. Keep them in a cool dry place OR, to extend the life up to 4 weeks, keep them in the refrigerator.
