Ingredients You’ll Need

The ingredient list for this is SHORT. You only need four super basic ingredients, which you probably already have on hand!

  • Tortillas: For churro chips, it’s usually best to go with flour tortillas. Flour tortillas become delightfully crispy yet slightly chewy when baked or fried, closely mimicking traditional churros.
  • Oil: I prefer the finish you get when using oil instead of melted butter, however you can use either. If you’re after that classic, buttery taste, go for butter. If you prefer a lighter snack where the spices are the stars, oil is your friend.
  • Sugar: Reach for white, or granulated, sugar. The fine crystals stick well to the chips and melt beautifully when heated, giving you that signature churro-like crust.
  • Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon mixed with sugar gives you that classic churro flavor.

Churro Chip Recipe

Here’s a simple guide to making churro chips in the air fryer.

  1. Prep the Tortillas: Cut the flour tortillas into triangle shapes, similar to nacho chips.
  2. Oil Them Up: Lightly brush both sides of the tortilla pieces with oil. This helps them crisp up without being too heavy.
  3. Mix Cinnamon and Sugar: In a small bowl, mix equal parts granulated white sugar and ground cinnamon. Feel free to adjust the ratio to your taste.
  4. Coat the Chips: Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture generously over both sides of the oiled tortilla pieces.
  5. Air Fry in Batches: Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Place a single layer of the tortilla pieces in the basket, ensuring they don’t overlap for even cooking. Cook for about 5-8 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy. The cooking time might vary depending on your air fryer.
  6. Cool and Serve: Let the churro chips cool for a few minutes after frying. They will crisp up a bit more as they cool. Serve and enjoy!

Expert Recipe Tips

  • Even Oil Application: Use a brush for an even, light coating of oil on both sides of the tortilla pieces. This helps with even cooking and crispiness.
  • Uniform Size: Cut the tortillas into uniform shapes and sizes for consistent cooking. Inconsistent sizes lead to some chips cooking faster than others.
  • Avoid Overcrowding: Cook in batches if necessary to avoid overlapping in the air fryer. Overcrowding can lead to uneven cooking.
  • Let Them Cool: Allow the chips to cool for a few minutes after cooking. They crisp up more as they cool.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make these churro chips with corn tortillas?

Yes, you can, but they will have a different texture and a more pronounced corn flavor compared to flour tortillas. We tested both versions and prefer flour tortillas.

How do I store leftover churro chips?

Store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They’re best enjoyed within a couple of days. After that they will start to taste slightly stale.

Can I make these chips without an air fryer?

Yep. Bake in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes, flipping once halfway through. Chips are done when they are slightly crisp.

Can I add other spices to the cinnamon sugar mix?

Certainly! Feel free to experiment with spices like nutmeg or cardamom for a different flavor profile.

What’s the best way to cut the tortillas?

A pizza cutter or sharp kitchen scissors works best for evenly sized pieces.

  •  In a small bowl, mix the granulated white sugar and ground cinnamon.
  • Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture generously over both sides of the oiled tortilla pieces.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C).

  • Let the churro chips cool for a few minutes after frying. They will crisp up a bit more as they cool. Serve and enjoy!

Notes
