Why You’ll Love The Churro Waffle

  • Fusion Fun: It’s a creative twist combining two beloved treats. Perfect for foodies who love to experiment and bring a little excitement to the kitchen.
  • Brunch Hero: Planning a brunch? Churro waffles are a surefire hit. They’re unique enough to impress guests and familiar enough to be a crowd-pleaser.
  • Easy and Adaptable: This recipe is simple and versatile. You can dress it up with toppings or keep it classic. Either way, you end up with a delicious treat without too much fuss.

I LOVE CHURROS. Seriously, they are a nostalgic treat that make me happy any time I get the chance to chow one down. My dad would always spoil me with the special cinnamon and sugar fried dough when we would go on errand runs together.

I took my love for churros and combined that with my favorite waffle creating a cinnamon sugar waffle recipe. It is light, fluffy, and slightly crisp on the outside. Add melted butter, and a quick toss of cinnamon and sugar coating, and you have the most insanely decadent breakfast treat!

Ingredients You’ll Need

These are actually just regular waffles with a cinnamon sugar twist, which means it uses simple ingredients that you most likely already have on hand! Here is what you will need to make this delicious breakfast!

  • All-purpose flour: For waffles that are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, all-purpose flour is usually your best bet. It’s a pantry staple and gives a nice balance between lightness and structure.
  • Granulated sugar: The classic choice. It blends well into the batter and provides a familiar sweet taste without affecting the color or flavor too much. It is also essential for the outside sugar coating.
  • Baking powder: is a leavening agent. When it’s mixed into the batter and heated, it causes the waffles to rise, making them fluffy and light.
  • Eggs: The proteins in eggs set up as they cook, giving your waffles a firm structure so they don’t just collapse when you take them off the iron.
  • Milk: The classic choice is whole milk. It adds richness and depth of flavor thanks to its higher fat content. Great for creating that classic, indulgent waffle texture. That being said, we also like this recipe with buttermilk.
  • Butter: It helps in achieving that dreamy combo of crispy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside waffles. You’ll also use a little on the outside of the waffle to help the cinnamon and sugar mix hold together.
  • Vanilla Extract: Vanilla adds a warm, rich aroma and a depth of flavor that makes everything taste better. It’s like the difference between a good day and a great day.
  • Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon is what gives the churro batter its classic flavor.
  • Toppings: Optional, but this recipe is insanely delicious with my homemade buttermilk syrup or a big scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Churro Waffle Recipe

  1. Prep the Waffle Iron: Preheat your waffle maker to medium-high heat. Give it a light coat of non-stick spray or a brush of butter to keep your waffles from sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, 1/4 cup sugar, and baking powder. This is the dry base of your waffles.
  3. Beat the Eggs: In another bowl, beat the eggs until fluffy. This adds air and volume to your waffles.
  4. Combine Wet Ingredients: To the beaten eggs, add milk (whole or buttermilk), 1/2 cup melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix these well.
  5. Mix Wet into Dry: Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined. Remember, a few lumps are okay – over mixing can lead to dense waffles.
  6. Cook the Waffles: Scoop enough batter onto the preheated waffle iron to cover the grids. Close the lid and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crisp. This usually takes about 4-5 minutes, but check according to your waffle iron instructions.
  7. Prepare the Topping: While the waffles cook, mix 1 tablespoon cinnamon and 1/2 cup sugar in a shallow dish. Melt 1/4 cup butter in another dish.
  8. Finish with Flair: Once cooked, remove the waffle and brush both sides lightly with melted butter. Then, dip each side into the cinnamon-sugar mix, coating it well.
  9. Serve and Enjoy: Serve these churro waffles warm. They’re fantastic as is, or you can up the ante with toppings like whipped cream, syrup, or fresh fruit.

And there you have it – Churro Waffles that’ll make any morning or brunch extra special. Enjoy the perfect blend of crispy, fluffy, and sweet, all in one amazing dish!

Helpful Tools

For whipping up those delightful Churro Waffles, having the right tools can make all the difference. Here’s a list of kitchen gadgets and utensils that’ll help you:

  • Waffle Iron (affiliate): The star of the show. A good-quality waffle iron ensures even cooking and that classic waffle texture.
  • Mixing Bowls (affiliate): You’ll need at least two – one for mixing your dry ingredients and one for the wet.
  • Whisk (affiliate): Essential for beating your eggs to fluffy perfection and ensuring your wet and dry ingredients are well combined.
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons (affiliate): Accuracy is key in baking, so these are a must for measuring your ingredients.

Tips for this recipe:

  • This recipe is freezer friendly. Make the waffles and freeze fully before you add the butter, cinnamon, and sugar. Heat in the toaster or oven for 5-10 minutes until heather through. Brush with butter and dust with cinnamon and sugar.
  • Do not over mix your batter. I always recommend hand mixing your batter. A light mix allows the ingredients to incorporate while keeping air in the mixture keeping your waffles light and fluffy.
  • Use room temperature ingredients. Having ingredients the same temperature helps everything to mix together quickly.

Recipe Notes:

Remember, the key to great cinnamon sugar waffles is to experiment and find what works best for you. Each batch is an opportunity to fine-tune your recipe to waffle perfection!

Can I make these waffles ahead of time?

Absolutely! Cook them according to the recipe, let them cool, and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the toaster or oven for best results.

How do I prevent the waffles from becoming soggy?

Avoid stacking hot waffles on top of each other, as this creates steam and sogginess. Place them in a single layer on a cooling rack or keep them warm in a low oven.

Can I freeze these waffles?

Yes, they freeze beautifully! Place cooled waffles in a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. Reheat in a toaster or oven directly from the freezer.

What can I serve with cinnamon sugar waffles?

This churro waffle recipe is delicious all on it’s own, but it also pairs well with whipped cream, maple syrup, or a scoop of ice cream.

Can I use a different type of milk, like almond or oat milk?

Certainly! Non-dairy milks can be used as a one-to-one substitute for regular milk. Just remember this may change the texture of the waffle slightly.

How do I know when the waffle is cooked perfectly?

Waffles are usually done when they are golden brown and the waffle iron stops steaming.

Can’t wait to try this, sounds amazing!! Do you use salted or unsalted butter for brushing on at the end please?

    1. Hi Amy, that is a great question! We like a little salt with our sweet, so I use salted butter. However, this recipe would taste equally delicious with unsalted.
