  • Family Favorite Recipe

This recipe has been made dozens of times in our home. My husband has even declared it better than all of the pizza joints we have tried, which is saying a lot! It is ideal for a busy weeknight dinner. Minimal ingredients and less than five minutes to prep.

Best of all, you probably already have most of the ingredients on hand!

Tomato paste in a can on a table

Easy Pizza Sauce Ingredients

The secret to this pizza sauce recipe is tomato paste. One tiny can can make enough sauce for 2 to 4 pizzas! The seasonings have been perfected and give you a sauce that will rival even your favorite local joint!

  • Tomato Paste- This recipe tastes great with any brand (even off-brands!). Do not substitute with tomato sauce. It’s far too thin and won’t give you this great consistency.
  • Water
  • Parmesan- Grated from a can, not fresh. Trust me on this. It adds the perfect balance of cheesy goodness.
  • Garlic Powder, Salt, Dried Basil, Oregano, and Parsley- All of these are key in getting a bold flavor that balances out the tomato.
  • Sugar
  • Onion Powder
  • Red Pepper Flakes

What is the Serving Size?

I mentioned above that this can make 2 to 4 pizzas. There is no exact serving size. We spoon a generous portion onto our prepared pizza dough. Typically we can get 3 medium sized pizzas or 3 large from one batch of this sauce.

Try this recipe on my mini pizzas, especially the Halloween Pizza Recipe! Want a switch of flavors? Use my homemade pesto instead!

How to Make Pizza Sauce from Scratch:

One of the very best things about this recipe is that you do not need to cook it and no blender required!

  1. Slowly stir together the tomato paste and water, adding only a tablespoon or two at a time, until the desired texture is reached.
  2. Leave out water if the sauce starts to become too thin.
  3. Whisk in the remaining ingredients and spread onto your favorite pizza dough.

Pro Tip: This recipe calls for water. Instead of getting out a measuring cup, just fill the tomato paste can and use that as your measurement!

Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe Tips and FAQs

How to Freeze Pizza Sauce:

As a small family of 3, we typically go through half of this homemade pizza sauce recipe for our pizza nights. We spread it on pretty thick but hate to see the rest go to waste. WHICH brings me to this lovely tip! You can FREEZE this recipe!

  1. Place the leftover sauce in a freezer safe zip top bag.
  2. Label and freeze up to 3 months.
  3. Optional, pre-measure the sauce so you can have it ready for the size that fits your cooking needs.

I find it handy to use a sharpie to label and date my freezer meals. That way you can keep track of how long it has been stored.

What is the Difference Between Pizza Sauce and Spaghetti Sauce?

The biggest difference between the two is that pizza sauce is normally uncooked while spaghetti sauce is slow simmered. Spaghetti sauce will also tend to have more ingredients like fresh herbs and tomatoes.

How Long Does Pizza Sauce Last?

This recipe will keep for 5 days if stored properly in the refrigerator.

It will thicken slightly. Whisk 1 tablespoon of water before adding to your pizza.
