How has it taken me THIS long to add this classic dessert recipe to my website??
The BEST Rice kirspie treats are a quick dessert that are made with a rice puff cereal bound together with melted butter and marshmallows. That means you only need THREE key ingredients. Oh, and they take less than 10 minutes to make (after some practice)!
Did I also mention these are ideal for lunch boxes?? They hold up well, which means you will not end up with a smashed treat in the bottom of the packed lunch!
I also happen to be extremely addicted.
Thing is, there are only three ingredients in this recipe. They are also practically perfect straight from the recipe found on the back of the box. I only made one big change to the ingredient amounts. More butter. For good reason. It helps add a gooey finish that is out of this world delicious.
What You Need:
- Rice Puff Cereal- We like to use Rice Krispies
- Butter- Salted is preferred.
- Marshmallows- Mini work best. 10 oz or 4 cups.
Rice Krispie Treat Variations:
- While the classic is my all-time favorite, here are a few great variations to this easy dessert that are worth trying!
- Fruity Cereal Treats- Replace the cereal with Fruity Pebbles or Trix
- Chocolate Cereal Treats- Replace the cereal with Cocoa Pebbles
- Peanut Butter Treats- Lower the amount of butter by half and stir in 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter.
Step by Step Instructions:
- Prepare a 9×13 dish by buttering or misting with cooking spray (we like coconut oil spray).
- Melt the butter in a large pot.
- Stir in the marshmallows and stir with a silicone spatula until melted.
- Working quickly, add the cereal and stir to combine fully with the melted marshmallow mixture. Transfer to your prepared dish. Gently press into an even layer.
- Allow the bars to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Slice and serve!
Tips and tricks for perfect rice kirspie treats:
- Always butter the dish before you press down the cereal treats. This will help ensure you can get them out when you are ready to eat them.
- Butter your fingers to help keep the marshmallows from sticking as you press them down. You could also butter a piece of wax paper and use that to press the treats as well!
- GENTLY press the treats down. You only want them lightly pressed into the pan. Pressing too hard will result in less gooey and more crunchy bars.
- Keep the bars stored in a covered container on the counter for the best shelf life.
How to make rice krispie treats in the microwave:
No stove? No problem! While I suggest sticking with the stove top method… You can always make this treat using your microwave.
- Place the butter and marshmallows in a large microwave safe bowl.
- Heat for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring every 1 minute, until melted.
- Working quickly, add the cereal and stir to combine fully with the melted marshmallow mixture. Transfer to your prepared dish. Gently press into an even layer.
- Allow the bars to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Slice and serve!
